Dr. Alister MacKenzie (1870 – 1934)
Alister MacKenzie was one of the most significant architects of his time and many modern course designers considered him their inspiration.
In 1927 Cork Golf Club were fortunate to secure the services of MacKenzie to re-design their existing course and under the critical eye of his assistant Jack Fleming, MacKenzie drew up a design which made full use of the dramatic terrain which is unique to Cork Golf Club.
MacKenzie used the natural humps and hollows, and tied in artificial features so that they became an integral part of the course’s topography.
Visitors can not help but admire holes 6, 7, 8 and 9 as they are played in the bowels of the old stone quarry which took hundreds of years to excavate.
Dr. MacKenzie was responsible for such masterpieces as:Alwoodley (1907), Moortown, which hosted the first Ryder Cup. Cypress Point, Augusta National, Royal Melbourne and many of the worlds greatest courses.
Cork Golf Club is proud to be a member of the “MacKenzie Family |
